How to Wash a King Size Comforter (Without Ruining It)

January 2025 · 5 min read

Your king size comforter is too big for your home washer, but that doesn't mean you need to pay for expensive dry cleaning. Here's how to wash it properly at a laundromat with large capacity washers.

What Size Washer Do You Need?

This is the most important factor. A king size comforter needs room to move around for proper cleaning. Here's a quick guide:

  • 60-80 lb washer: Ideal for king comforters (what we recommend)
  • 40-50 lb washer: Works for queen comforters
  • Under 40 lb: Too small - your comforter won't get clean

At Suds Laundromat, we have 8-load Dexter commercial washers - perfect for even the fluffiest king comforters.

Step-by-Step Washing Instructions

Step 1: Check the Care Label

Most comforters can be machine washed, but check for any special instructions. Down comforters and those marked "dry clean only" need extra care.

Step 2: Pre-treat Stains

Spot treat any visible stains before washing. Apply a small amount of detergent directly to the stain and gently rub it in. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.

Step 3: Load the Washer Properly

Place the comforter loosely in the drum - don't stuff it in. The comforter needs room to move for proper cleaning. If it looks crammed, use a bigger machine.

Step 4: Choose the Right Settings

  • Water temperature: Cold or warm (not hot)
  • Cycle: Gentle or delicate
  • Detergent: Use half the normal amount (HE detergent works best)

Step 5: Rinse Twice

Run an extra rinse cycle to make sure all detergent is removed. Soap residue can make your comforter feel stiff and attract dirt faster.

Drying Your Comforter

Proper drying is just as important as washing. Here's how to do it right:

  • Use a large dryer: Same rule as washing - your comforter needs room
  • Medium heat: High heat can damage filling and fabric
  • Add dryer balls: Tennis balls or wool dryer balls prevent clumping
  • Check for dampness: Run multiple cycles until completely dry

Important: Never put away a damp comforter - it will develop mold and mildew. Make sure it's 100% dry before folding.

How Often Should You Wash Your Comforter?

Most experts recommend washing your comforter 2-4 times per year. If you use a duvet cover, you can wash less frequently since the cover protects the comforter from body oils and dirt.

Don't Want to Do It Yourself?

If washing your comforter sounds like too much work, we offer wash and fold service at both our Surprise and Phoenix locations. Just drop it off, and we'll wash, dry, and fold it for you - usually ready next day.
